One of the world’s most beautiful retreats, Sangsurya is a unique jewel in Byron’s crown. A social enterprise built on the foundation of love, pure intention and service to humanity by the late Mona and Tony Kruger, Sangsurya Retreat Centre has been a place of refuge and healing for thousands of people from all four corners of the globe for 30 years. In the peaceful environment of Sangsurya Retreat Centre you’d never know you were just a few minutes away from downtown Byron Bay, and its diverse range of cafes, restaurants, idyllic beaches and a host of local recreational activities.

Sangsurya is a Sanskrit inspired word meaning “a place where the sun reaches everybody”. Built along the forested ridge of a 10 acre property with easterly views overlooking Arakwal Aboriginal land to the Pacific Ocean, our environmentally friendly retreat venue offers seclusion and tranquillity in the heart of nature, and a sanctuary in which to escape the pressures of a busy life. In these uncertain times, with technology disconnecting us from nature and stress related illness on the rise, spending time in the beauty of Sangsurya is more important than ever.

Accommodation at Sangsurya Retreat Centre is in Thai style hand-built timber-floored houses and cabins. There are 18 bedrooms in total offering a variety of Single and Share options to provide accommodation for up to 29 guests. Bedrooms are uniquely positioned amidst sub-tropical gardens to give a wonderful sense of privacy and connection to nature. Each room has been individually designed and exquisitely furnished to have its own charming ambience. All are heated, air-conditioned and have ceiling fans. There are 6 room types as follows: Large Single Room with ensuite, Medium Single Room with ensuite, Small Single Room with ensuite, Single Room with Share Bathroom, Twin Share Room with ensuite, Triple Share Room with ensuite.

About The Host

Steve Sagaro and Shirsha Marie

Established by the late  Tony Kruger and Mona Wurtz, Sangsurya Retreat Centre began over 30 years ago when husband and wife team, Tony Kruger and Mona Wurtz, met in London and began their 15 year spiritual relationship and marriage. At this time Mona, a Jungian Analyst, was the personal assistant to Mrs Irina Tweedie, the well-known Western meditation teacher of the Naqshbandiyya Sufi lineage.

With wholehearted spiritual intent, Tony and Mona named their Retreat Centre ‘Sangsurya’ a Sanskrit word which means “a place where the sun reaches everybody”. Tony and Mona were well loved by the local community and so many people hold them dearly in their hearts with gratitude and love. Sadly Mona passed away on 8th October 2005 and Tony passed away on 21st March 2017.

Tony ensured that Sangsurya would be managed by like-minded people who would sustain the facility with similar intentions and interests as Mona and he had envisioned. He asked Steve Sagaro and Shirsha Marie to be the caretakers and managers of Sangsurya, going forward. They do so with great love and dedication to protecting, maintaining and providing this beautiful health and meditation sanctuary for our national and global personal development community.
